Your baby or toddler will love these easy homemade breast milk popsicles. Breast milk pops are perfect for a hot summer day or you can even use them as a teething popsicle! Save this recipe as another fun way to use every drop of your hard earned liquid gold.

Are breast milk popsicles safe?
Yes! I recommend using a silicone mold like this baby popsicle mold. That way there is a barrier between the frozen breast milk and your baby’s gums. This will avoid pieces of the popsicle breaking off while your baby is chewing on them creating a choking hazard. It will also prevent any issues with their gums getting too cold. For older kids where choking isn’t as much of a concern, you can use the traditional popsicle molds.

Breast milk popsicles for teething babies
Using these as teething popsicles is a great alternative to teething rings. My teething baby loved to chew and soothe their sore gums on a breast milk teether pop.
How long are breastmilk popsicles good for?
If you use fresh breast milk to make popsicles, you can follow the normal storage recommendations for breast milk. It’s 3-6 months in a regular freezer and 6-12 months for a deep freezer. So it will depend on how you store them when determining how long the breast milk pops are good for. You can view all storage recommendations here.

When can babies have breast milk popsicles?
When to give breast milk popsicles will depend on how you make them. For breast milk popsicles made with breast milk only, you can give them to your baby when they start teething. If you are adding solids like fruits or vegetable puree, then you would want to wait until your baby is ready for solid foods (usually about 6 months of age) for those recipes.
My babies liked to chew on the silicone breast milk popsicles. I wouldn’t recommend regular popsicle molds unless you are making these breast milk pops for older toddlers. That way choking isn’t as much of a concern if they chew off a piece. For older toddlers, you can use also an ice cube tray and popsicle sticks if you have them laying around.
Should I use fresh or frozen breast milk?
Fresh breast milk should be used. It is not recommended to thaw out breast milk and refreeze. See complete storage recommendations for breast milk here. That being said, I have made breast milk popsicles with milk thawed in the fridge with a few ice crystals in it still. I used these for my older toddler. But to reiterate, it’s not recommended to thaw and refreeze. So if you choose to do so, know there may be some risk of your breast milk spoiling.

How to make breast milk popsicles
Equipment
- Silicone baby popsicle molds
- Ingredients
- 3-4 ounces of breastmilk
- Diced fruit, mashed avocado, or purees (optional)
Step 1
Firstly, sterilize or wash breast milk molds. Next you will express breast milk for the pops. I would start with smaller amounts (about 2-4 ounces) until you know how well your baby will like them.
Step 2 (optional)
For older babies, add any puree, chopped fruit or vegetables to the bottom of the molds. I would sometimes add mashed avocado or sweet potato. The teething molds are small and will only hold a small amount. So don’t overfill it.
Step 3
Carefully fill the breast milk popsicle mold with breast milk.
Step 4
Last, place in the freezer. You’ll want to find a spot in your freezer for the breast milk popsicles molds to sit level. These will freeze solid in 4-6 hours. I usually let mine sit overnight.
Once these are frozen, I will then transfer them to my deep freezer if I know we won’t go through them all in the next month or two.
Alternative to silicone molds
An alternative to using silicone molds is freezing a small amount of breast milk into ice cubes in an ice tray. You can then use a mesh feeder like this one and place the breast milk cubes into the mesh feeder. Your baby can chew away without the concern of choking on pieces that might get chewed off.
Conclusion
All three of my kiddos loved these as a teether popsicle and as a cool treat in the summer. I mixed breast milk in most of baby popsicles for teething. You can also just puree fruit and mix with yogurt or other types of milk if you don’t have the extra breast milk.
