No juicer? No problem!
Head over to my entire guide on how to make apple juice. There you will find my step-by-step guide on making juice with a blender (or food processor). A blender is a great way to make the best juice too. I answer every question you might have about making apple juice.
Let’s Juice!
I like to juice apples for both fun and health. In the Fall we add making apple juice to our Fall bucket list as a family. We either pick apples from my grandparent’s apple tree or visit a local orchard and bring home some extra apples to make the best apple juice.
Last year we picked different varieties and had our own apple cider taste test for fun. The juicing process is seriously so easy. Which is great because my kids love to help. We usually add some cinnamon and spices and enjoy it warm if it’s a chilly day. We freeze the leftovers and we enjoy the fresh apple juice throughout the year.
I also have been juicing more for health benefits. This is on a more regular basis than just once a year. I generally add different fruits and vegetables to maximize the health benefits.
If you fall into either of these categories, you’re in the right place. I will cover everything you need to know for a beginner!
Ingredients
Apples- The apple variety you pick will depend on a few things. You will want to consider how sweet you want your apple juice to be, your budget, and what varieties of apples you have available to you. Red delicious apples are a type of apple known for being sweet and more affordable.
Gala apples are also sweeter apples that will give a more sweet juice. The tart flavors of the pink lady apple is also a nice balance. Granny smith apples (green apples) are my favorite when I’m juicing more frequently with other fruits and vegetables. Different types of apples can be blended as well. Tart apples and sweet apples mixed together makes the best flavor.

Steps
Step 1: Prepare your apples
Prepare your apples by washing thoroughly. You can choose if you want to peel your apples or not. For me, I like to leave the peel on because of the nutrients in the peels.
Important tip!- If you buy apples from the store, they will come with a wax coating. You want to wash this coating off by submerging your apples in hot water and rubbing with a cloth. This wax can cause build up in your juicer.
Step 2: Core and chop your apples
Some people choose to juice the whole apple. I like to remove the stem and apple seeds and cut them into halves or quarters. The stem can be hard on your juicer. Removing the apple cores is up you!
Important tip!– Apple seeds contain a very small amount of cyanide. Some people prefer to remove the apples seeds before juicing, while others leave them in. You would have to ingest an extreme amount of apple seeds before they would have any effect. The choice is up to you if you want to leave them in or remove them.
Step 3: Juice!
Place chopped apples into the juicer. One by one, place apple quarter into juicer and process them through.
Step 4: Enjoy your refreshing apple juice
I like to add ice and a squeeze of lemon juice. Enjoy at room temperature or you can also chill this in the refrigerator or warm it up for a Fall or Winter drink. I recommend consuming your delicious juice fresh within the first 24 hours. You can also heat your homemade apple cider and add cinnamon sticks for a Fall treat. Don’t forget to save your leftover apple pulp for cooking and baking!
Storage
When you make your own apple juice, it will not have a long shelf life. If you will be storing your leftover juice in the fridge or freezer for any length of time, I recommend adding a little lemon juice to preserve freshness and prevent discoloration. Like fresh apples when they are cut, fresh apple juice will discolor some when it oxidizes.
Store your fresh homemade apple juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. I like to using glass canning jars.
Freezer storage
You can freeze your fresh juice if you want to save some for later. Read more about freezing apple juice.
Tip!
Homemade apple juice will look a little different than your typical store bought apple juice. It will have a cloudy appearance. It has not been filtered or processed as much. This also means that your apple juice made at home has more health benefits!
FAQ
Should I peel my apples?
This is really personal preference. I like to leave the peels on to reduce waste and get the most health benefits from the juice as possible. I have, on occasion, peeled the apples when making juice with my kids in the Fall.
What can I do with the extra apple pulp?
You can always add a little pulp back into the juice if you like your juice that way. Or you can bake muffins, make fruit leather or cook with the pulp too!
How many apples do I need to make homemade juice?
About 3 medium-sized apples will make one cup of juice. How much juice you get from your apples will also depend on the variety of apple.
What are the best apples for juicing?
I discuss several apple varieties in my guide to choosing the best apples for juicing.
What’s the difference between apple juice and apple cider?
Apple juice is filtered and processed. This is the typical apple juice you buy in the grocery store. Apple cider (in the United States) is what I consider to be fresh or homemade apple juice. It will be cloudy and have some sediment. Apple cider in other countries usually has alcohol in it.
What are the best apples for green juice?
My favorite apples for mixing with green juice or vegetable juice is the Granny Smith. They have a higher juice content and are more tart.
If you find yourself with an abundance of apples, get out your electric juicer and make some of this delicious and refreshing juice. You can make this homemade apple juice recipe so many different ways just by adding other spices or fruits. It really is the best base for any other fruit juices you may want to add.
