If you’ve ever thawed out milk and were unable to use it all or found a stash of breast milk in the bottom of your freezer from 2 years ago – don’t throw it out! It’s still perfectly good for things like breast milk lotion. This is just one great way to still use it.
Breast milk lotion benefits
I struggled with eczema with my first baby. After doing some research I found that breast milk was found to be just as effective at treating eczema when compared to hydrocortisone cream! I couldn’t wait to try it on my baby’s skin. I wanted to do what I could to help her healing process and soothe her itchy dry skin.
A major benefit of using this homemade breast milk lotion recipe, is that it has a thicker consistency than just plain breast milk. A lotion is easier to apply and rub in. Whenever my littles have minor skin irritations, my own breast milk (if I have it in my freezer) is my first go to.
What is breast milk lotion good for?
There is a wide variety of uses for your DIY breast milk lotion. Research has shown that the use of topical breast milk can help with many common conditions including:
- Diaper rash
- Eczema
- Baby acne
- Cradle cap
- Dry skin
- Minor cuts and burns
- Superficial wounds
And this research is just scratching the surface when it comes to breastmilk’s amazing topical benefits.

Save your expired milk!
For me, when I had a situation where my baby didn’t drink all their thawed out milk within the timeframe suggested, I poured it back into a breast milk bag and then marked it with an X. This way, I knew that particular milk was for either breastmilk soap making, homemade lotion or milk baths. I refreeze the milk until I’m ready to make something with it later.
Does breast milk lotion need to be refrigerated?
Yes! Please refrigerate the finished product. Be sure to mark it with something like mothers milk lotion, so there’s no confusion!
How long does breast milk lotion last?
Your baby’s breast milk lotion can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. You can also make a smaller batch of lotion if you are worried about it spoiling too fast. Please discard if it develops mold or a sour smell.
This simple recipe for breastmilk lotion is so easy to make and only needs a few ingredients:
- 1/2 tablespoon Beeswax
- 1.5 oz oil of your choice (jojoba oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, olive oil)
- Vitamin E oil (optional) -a few drops
- 1.5 oz oz of milk
- 2 drops essential oils (optional)
How to make breast milk lotion
Step-by-step instructions:
- First, bring your breast milk to room temperature. You can use fresh milk, or frozen milk. You will want to do this before starting to warm your grape seed oil (or other choice of oil) and wax. I personally like to use coconut oil because I think it helps with the texture.
- If you’re using frozen breast milk you can thaw it out in a warm bowl of water.

- Next, place beeswax and oil into a microwave safe dish. Microwave beeswax and oil on low at 5-10 second intervals. Stir in between to prevent overheating. You can also use a double boiler if you have one.
- Add vitamin E oil and any essential oils at this time. I personally prefer to leave essential oils out of my lotion.
- Carefully add your breast milk to the mixture.

- Now, using an electric mixer, mix on low speed until lotion thickens. This may take a few minutes. Lotion will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Store lotion in the refrigerator. Use refrigerated breast milk lotion within 5-7 days. If at any point the lotion starts to develop a foul or sour smell, please discard it and do not use it.
It’s not recommended to store in the freezer as this can affect the texture. Although you certainly can freeze it, if you don’t mind the texture change.

How long is breast milk lotion good for and how to store breast milk lotion
This is important! This DIY breast milk lotion recipe does not have a long shelf life. It’s not like regular lotion, it does not include any preservatives. Because of this, it will be susceptible to mold and bacteria. Store in a sterilized air tight container for 5-7 days.

I would also recommend doing a skin patch test, if you are using these ingredients for the first time on yourself or your baby. Rub a small amount of lotion on a small patch of skin and then observe for any adverse reaction. I prefer to leave essential oils out of my lotion but you can use up to 5 drops of your favorite baby safe essential oils! The beauty of making your own lotion, is you get to control what goes into it. Its perfect for all skin types including sensitive skin.
